The F.R.A.M.E approach to framing your art

Five simple principles that cover everything you need to know to frame your artwork with confidence and care.

F
Find the right size frame

Choose a frame that is slightly larger than your artwork to allow for matting. This creates a visual border between the print and the frame, and prevents the print from touching the glass, which can cause damage over time. Consider the size of the wall and the room too — a frame that feels right in isolation can look very different once it's hung.

The guide includes sizing guidance so you never have to guess.
R
Reflect on the style of the artwork

Let the artwork guide your frame choice. Modern and minimalist prints suit clean, simple frames. More expressive or layered pieces can handle something with more presence. Consider colour and finish: natural wood or metal frames work beautifully with contemporary art, while painted finishes suit more traditional styles.

A neutral frame colour will complement almost any artwork without competing with it.
A
Always use acid-free materials

For art you want to last, always use acid-free matting and backing board. Standard materials contain acid that causes yellowing and deterioration over time, which is irreversible. Acid-free materials are widely available and make a real difference to the long-term quality of your framing.

This single step protects your investment for decades.
M
Mind the type of glass

Standard glass creates glare and reflections that can distract from the artwork. Non-reflective glass reduces glare but can dull the colours slightly. UV-protective glass is the best choice for preserving quality, blocking the harmful rays that cause fading and discolouration over time. For homes with children or busy areas, acrylic is a practical and safe alternative to glass.

If your artwork is in a bright or sunlit room, UV-protective glass is worth the investment.
E
Evaluate the hanging location

Think about where the piece will live before you hang it. Sunlit rooms need UV-protective glass. High-traffic areas benefit from shatter-proof acrylic. Use appropriate hardware: wire hangers for larger, heavier pieces and sawtooth hangers for smaller works. Hang at eye level for the most natural, comfortable viewing experience.

Take a photo of the wall before you hang — it helps you visualise scale and position in advance.
