How to Find Affordable Local Art (and Have Fun Doing It!)

How to Find Affordable Local Art (and Have Fun Doing It!)

Hi sweet friend,

Finding art for your home doesn’t have to feel overwhelming—it can actually be fun, inspiring, and lead to some of the best days out. Whether you’re searching for a piece that feels like you, looking to support independent artists, or just want to explore something beyond mass-produced decor, I’ve got you covered.

Here are my go-to ways to discover incredible local artists (without spending a fortune!):

1. Facebook Groups Are Your Best Friend

Home décor Facebook groups are goldmines for discovering local artists. People in these groups love to share their favorite finds, and you’ll often come across artists showcasing their own work too. It’s a great way to get real recommendations, see art in real homes, and even connect directly with the artist before purchasing.

2. Tap Into the Interior Designer Network

Interior designers have an eye for beautiful, unique pieces, and they often collaborate with local artists to source one-of-a-kind artwork for their clients. If you have a favorite designer (or follow one on Instagram), don’t be afraid to reach out and ask if they can recommend any artists in your area.

3. Search Instagram Hashtags

Instagram is basically a huge art gallery at your fingertips! Try searching hashtags like #LocalArtist #AffordableArt #[YourCity]Art to find artists near you. Once you find a few you love, engage with their work—comment, follow, and even DM them to ask about available pieces. Many artists are happy to chat about their work, and you might even get first dibs on new releases.

4. Visit Local Art Fairs and Galleries

Nothing beats seeing art in person. The Affordable Art Fair is one of my faves for finding original, budget-friendly pieces. If you’re into handcrafted, one-of-a-kind pieces, London Craft Week is another must-visit—it’s packed with incredible artists and makers, plus opportunities to join workshops and learn more about the creative process.

If you’re outside London, check out smaller, independent galleries in your area. Many focus on emerging artists, which means you can discover beautiful pieces at prices that won’t make your wallet cry.

5. Explore Stores That Support Independent Artists

Shops like Wolf & Badger (where my art is stocked!) are brilliant for finding independent artists and makers. Whether you browse online or in-store, they feature a curated selection of artists whose work you won’t find in big retail chains. If you don’t have a Wolf & Badger near you, search for similar concept stores in your area—many cities have their own version!

6. Check Community Boards & Newsletters

Local libraries, coffee shops, and community centers often have notice boards with flyers about upcoming art events or featured local artists. And if you’re in London, the TimeOut newsletter is a great resource for discovering exhibitions, open studios, and independent makers to check out.

7. Attend Open Studio Days

Many artists open their studios a few times a year, inviting people to see where the magic happens. It’s such a personal experience—being able to chat with the artist, learn about their inspiration, and see pieces before they go to galleries. Plus, you often get to buy directly from them, which means lower prices and a more meaningful purchase!

8. Check Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace isn’t just for furniture and second-hand finds—it’s also a great place to discover local artists selling original work at affordable prices. Try searching for terms like “original painting,” “handmade wall art,” or “local artist [your city]” to find unique pieces near you. Many artists list their work directly, and since you’re buying from them without gallery markups, you might even get a great deal.

Love,

Affie
